Coastal Machine & Supply — Carencro, LA | Onsite | Full-Time
About Coastal Machine
Coastal Machine & Supply is a precision contract manufacturer specializing in large, complex turning and 5-axis milling for the Defense, Space, and Oil & Gas industries. We’re AS9100-certified and ITAR-registered, and we’ve built a reputation on getting new, demanding part families to production fast and proving they’re right. As our defense and space work scales, we’re investing in the people and capability that make that speed possible.
Why This Role Exists
This is a new seat, created to make metrology a driver of our growth instead of a bottleneck. As we bring on new defense part families at an increasing cadence, someone has to own whether we can inspect a new part, how fast, and to what proven capability — and make that capability repeatable and documented, not trapped in one person’s head. That’s this role. You’ll own the measurement system that lets Coastal commit to new work with confidence.
What You’ll Own
- The metrology standard for new and existing part families — one controlled, version-managed CMM program per family, built to the print’s datum scheme, so the floor runs to a single source of truth rather than per-inspector variation.
- Inspection fixturing standards that repeatably locate the part, independent of who’s running it.
- Measurement-system integrity — proving repeatability through Gage R&R / MSA before capability is claimed, and telling real part variation from measurement error before it drives a decision.
- New-family metrology readiness — standing up documented, proven inspection on each new family fast enough to hold our production commitments, and feeding that readiness into new-program go/no-go.
- Knowledge transfer as a real deliverable — co-developing every standard with our CMM programmer so the capability is genuinely shared, not a single point of failure.
What You Bring (Required)
- Deep CMM programming and GD&T interpretation skill — you can independently read a part’s datum scheme and build a controlled inspection program to it, including aligning print, machining-fixture, and CMM datums.
- Strong MSA / Gage R&R judgment — not just running the studies, but knowing when a result is measurement-system error versus genuine part variation.
- A track record of building metrology standards other people execute from — programs, method sheets, and fixturing standards a second person can run without you in the room.
What Sets You Apart (Preferred)
- PC-DMIS programming experience (comparable platforms like Calypso or PolyWorks transfer well if your GD&T foundation is strong).
- Hexagon CMM hardware experience.
- SPC fluency — control charts, control limits, telling common-cause from special-cause variation.
- Aerospace, defense, or space manufacturing background; familiarity with AS9100 / AS9102.
- ProShop or comparable ERP/QMS experience.
- Experience preparing FAIR / source-inspection packages for customer or government source inspection.
Work Environment
This role splits time between a temperature-controlled inspection environment and the production floor, with regular movement between the two. Expect extended standing and close-vision work at the CMM, handling of inspection fixtures and parts (lift assistance and equipment available for heavier items — we run large, heavy parts), and standard shop-floor PPE on the floor.
